STF 2024: Sõltumatu Tantsu Festival

The first Sõltumatu Tantsu Festival (STF) will take place on 26.09 – 05.10.2024 in Tallinn at  Telliskivi Creative City and Sõltumatu Tantsu Lava (STL). The festival invites both the audience and the dance community to celebrate together the diversity and uniqueness of the art of dance.

For centuries, bodies have been charged both socially and politically. In Estonia, anniversaries were celebrated with ritual folk dances, in France, women emancipated themselves by dancing the cancan at the Moulin Rouge, in the USA, the colorful LGBT+ community created vogueing as a way of free self-expression, which is now one of the most popular dance styles among young people. Dance is not meant to just move in the background, but to break through the crowd and speak with the body at the front of the stage.

This year, STF focuses on topical social issues such as burnout, beauty standards of the body and aging, technological possibilities in the art of dance as well as dance field specific discussions making sense of the role of dancers and dance art in the wider cultural landscape. Over 20 performances will be shown during the 10-day festival, among them the works of Ukrainian dance artists and dance students of the Icelandic University of the Arts. Additionally, there is an opportunity to participate in various dance workshops and discussion panels at Koreocafe.
